  • The May 1998 election resulted in the first popularly chosen Legislative Council since the People's Republic of China took control of Hong Kong on July 1, 1997, after 156 years as a British colony.
  • Since July 1997 Hong Kong has been governed by the temporary Provisional Legislature appointed by the People's Republic of China.
