Description
of electoral system:
- The president is elected by the Great
Council of Chiefs for a five-year term.
- Members of the Senate are appointed
by the Head of State; 14 are nominated by the General Council of Chiefs, 9 are nominated
by the Prime Minister, 8 are nominated by the leader of the opposition, and 1 is nominated
by the Council of Rotuma.
- Members of the House of
Representatives are directly elected by a majority system with preferential vote.
Forty-six House of Representatives seats are designated as communal seats, of which 23 are
allocated to indigenous Fijians, 19 to Indians, 1 to Rotuma, and 3 to general communal
electors. The remaining 25 seats are open seats.
