of government structure:
- Australia's bicameral legislature,
the Federal Parliament, is composed of the Senate and the House of Representatives.
- The Senate consists of 76 members
directly elected by a system of proportional representation.
- 72 members of the Senate represent
the Federal States (12 per each of the six states) and serve six-year terms, with half of these seats renewed every three years. The four remaining members of the Senate represent the two Federal Territories and are elected for three-year terms.
- The House of Representatives consists of 148 members elected by direct preferential majority vote for three-year terms.
