by simple majority vote in geographic constituencies for five-year terms.
Previously, members were elected by a system of proportional representation

Of Interest:
- On September 16,
2000, former President Alberto FUJIMORI announced early elections in
which he would not take part. This announcement followed the release
of a video tape that implicated Vladimiro MONTESINOS, FUJIMORI's intelligence
chief, in a corruption scandal.
- The presidential
elections held on April 9, 2000 and May 28, 2000 were surrounded by
allegations of fraud and protests led by opposition groups including
FUJIMORI's primary challengar Alejandro TOLEDO.
- Alan GARCIA was
President of Peru from 1985-1990, and has returned from exile to participate
in these elections.
