  • Number of registered voters: 7,072,496
Of Interest:
  • In February 1997 Ecuador's National Congress declared elected President BUCARAM "mentally incompetent" and removed him from office.  Congress elected Fabian ALARCON Rivera as interim president until August 1998. These events account for why the election for president was held in 1998 rather than 2000, when the term was scheduled to end.
  • The Social Christian Party (PSC), which holds a plurality of seats in the National Congress, did not present a candidate in the May 1998 election for president.
