|
Population
and number of registered voters:
- Population: 12,105,124 (July 1997
estimate)
- Number of registered voters: 7,072,496
|
Of Interest:
- In February 1997 Ecuador's National
Congress declared elected President BUCARAM "mentally incompetent" and removed
him from office. Congress elected Fabian ALARCON Rivera as interim president until
August 1998. These events account for why the election for president was held in
1998 rather than 2000, when the term was scheduled to end.
- The Social Christian Party (PSC), which
holds a plurality of seats in the National Congress, did not present a candidate in the
May 1998 election for president.
