  • Assemblies: The Dominican Republic has a bicameral National Congress consisting of a 149-member Chamber of Deputies (Camara de Diputados) and a 30-member Senate (Senado).
Description of electoral system:
  • The president is popularly elected for a four-year term.
  • All 30 members of the Senate are elected by simply majority vote in single member constituencies.
  • All 149 members of the Chamber of Deputies are elected by a closed party-list system with proportional distribution of seats according to the d'Hondt method of seat allocation.

Of Interest:
  • The former President of the Domican Republic, Joaquín Balaguer, was the candidate for the Social Christian Reform Party at the age of ninety-three. Balaguer served seven terms as president off and on between 1961 and 1996.
