Description
of government structure:
- Brazil's bicameral legislature, the Congresso
Nacional (National Congress), is composed of the Federal Senate and the Chamber of
Deputies.
- The Federal Senate consists of 81 members
elected by simple majority for eight-year terms.
- Elections to the Federal Senate are
staggered. In 1994 two-thirds of the Senate (54 seats) was up for election; in 1998
one-third of the Senate (27 seats) was up for election.
- The Chamber of Deputies consists of 513
members elected by proportional representation for four-year terms.
