Description of government structure:
  • Mozambique has a 250-seat unicameral Assembly of the Republic (Assembleia da Republica).
Description of electoral system:
  • The president is directly elected by the people for a five-year term.
  • The 250 members in the Assembly of the Republic are elected by popular vote via party lists for five-year terms.   Parties need to gain five percent of the vote in order to get parliamentary representation.
Results of the election for president:
  • Presidential Candidate: President Joaquim CHISSANO
    Party: Mozambican Liberation Front (FRELIMO)
    Valid Votes Received: 2,338,333
    Percent of Valid Votes Received: 52.29%

  • Presidential Candidate: Afonso DHLAKAMA
    Party: Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO)
    Valid Votes Received: 2,113,655
    Percent of Valid Votes Received: 47.29%

When was the last presidential election?
  • Presidential Election were last held on October 27, 1994
  • Results: President Joaquim CHISSANO won 53.3% of the vote, thereby defeating Afonso DHLAKAMA who received 33.3%.

  • Population: 19,124,335 (July 1999 estimate)
  • Number of registered voters: 7,099,105

  • The vote was the second multi-party election since the end of a 16-year war between RENAMO and FRELIMO.
