  • Parliament: Malawi's lower house of parliament, the National Assembly, will consist of 193 members.

  • The president is directly elected by simple majority vote for a five-year term.
  • Members of the National Assembly are directly elected by simple majority vote from 193 single-member constituencies.
  • Sixteen new electoral constituencies have been added to the National Assembly since the last election.

Of Interest:
  • The High Court in Malawi ruled in April 1999 that presidential and vice-presidential candidates from two different political parties may run on the same electoral ticket. This ruling allowed presidential candidate Gwanda CHAKUAMBA of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to choose Chakufwa CHIHANA of the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) as his running mate.
  • Originally planned for May 18, the Electoral Commission rescheduled the polling date first for May 25 and then June 15 due mainly to logistical delays with voter registration.
