Of Interest:
- The High Court in Malawi ruled in
April 1999 that presidential and vice-presidential candidates from two different political
parties may run on the same electoral ticket. This ruling allowed presidential candidate
Gwanda CHAKUAMBA of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to choose Chakufwa CHIHANA of the
Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) as his running mate.
- Originally planned for May 18, the
Electoral Commission rescheduled the polling date first for May 25 and then June 15 due
mainly to logistical delays with voter registration.
