- Elections were last held on March 6 and 16, 1996. A coup took place
April 30, 1999.
- Mohamed TAKI Abdulkarim
won 64.3% of the vote before passing away. Tajiddine Ben Said MASSOUNDE
assumed power on 6 November 1998 before being overthrown in a bloodless
coup April 30, 1999.

Of Interest:
- In a presidential primary
on Grand Comore on March 17, 2002 Assoumani was the top vote-recipient
followed by Mradabi and Kemal. Voters on all three islands will choose
among these three candidates in the presidential election.
- A majority of voters rejected
the proposed constitution for Grand Comore on March 17, 2002. This situation
might present a blockade for the upcoming second round of presidential
elections.
