South Korea faces government shakeup
May 22, 1999 SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) -- South Korea's cabinet will undergo a major change on Monday. Government spokesmen said the changes would focus on installing reformists. The presidential office said the cabinet will be reshuffled and local media reported that as many as ten of 18 ministers could be replaced. The shakeup would focus on replacing appointed former politicians with reformists and technocrats, the presidential office statement said. "The cabinet reshuffle is also necessary to accommodate the revised government organization law which requires restructuring a number of government bodies," an official from the presidential Blue House added. The official denied local newspaper reports that many of the former politicians were stepping down from their ministerial posts to prepare for upcoming parliamentary elections early next year. He declined to provide further details. The statement said President Kim Dae-jung had discussed the cabinet reshuffle during a meeting on Saturday with Prime Minister Kim Jong-pil. Reuters contributed to this report. RELATED SITES: Korea Herald
