Rioters hit Indonesian cities during Ramadan

December 27, 1998

JAKARTA, Indonesia (CNN) -- Rioters burned a discotheque and attacked shops selling liquor on the island of Sulawesi, government officials and residents said Sunday. It was one of two Christmas Day riots in Indonesia.

The Sulawesi rampage followed reports of a stabbing by a drunken Christian during Islam's holy month of Ramadan.

The violence occurred in the town of Poso, in Central Sulawesi province, about 1,560 km (980 miles) from Jakarta.

In addition, dozens were injured in the Sumatran city of Medan when about 5,000 people stormed a red-light district to demand its businesses close during Ramadan, the official Antara news agency reported Sunday.

Both riots occurred in areas with mixed populations of Christians and Muslims. The violence in Sulawesi abated only on Saturday.

Troops and police were stationed in Poso, a town of 30,000 northeast of Jakarta. Poso was calm on Sunday, government officials said. No church or mosque had been damaged.

The mob set one disco ablaze and damaged four others, and unloaded liquor from shops and burned it in the street. There were no immediate reports of casualties, authorities said.

The incident that sparked the violence happened on Christmas Eve, when a drunken man believed to be Christian allegedly stabbed a Muslim man following a quarrel. The wounded man sought refuge at a mosque.

One resident said the violence spurred by the stabbing lasted all night, as rioters damaged shops.

Indonesia has been hit by a series of religious riots as the country grapples with its worst financial crisis in decades. The business slump has driven up the prices of essentials and created mass unemployment.

Religious discord is a sensitive issue in Indonesia, where about 85 percent of the country's 200 million people are followers of Islam. In late November, Christian mobs torched and ransacked mosques in the eastern town of Kupang in West Timor during a protest against ethnic and religious riots.

In Medan, the capital of North Sumatra province, scores of people were injured when a mob stormed a red-light district, Antara said.

Medan is 1,350 km (845 miles) northwest of Jakarta. It was the site of numerous riots earlier this year, which led to the resignation of former president Suharto in May.

Reuters contributed to this report.
