Indian man says he's 125 years old

Man October 20, 1998

JAIPUR, India (CNN) -- Rahim Khan says he has lived 125 years, which may well make him India's oldest man.

He can never claim the title, however, since like most Indian elders, he has no birth certificate. The only official document suggesting that Rahim Khan is a century and a quarter old is one that certifies that he retired in 1938. At that time, most people retired at 65.

"I give him his pension every month," said banker Rajesh Nagpal. "One day he told me that he attended the funeral of a Jaipur nobleman (who died about 115 years ago) when he was 10 years old. That's when I realized how old he was."

Although his age cannot be proven, Rahim Khan is no doubt remarkably old and rather well-preserved. He lost his eyesight 36 years ago but says he has no medical problems and appears relatively fit.

"I have managed to live so long because, every day, I used to eat almonds and food made out of pure, clarified butter," he said. "I also never had bad habits like drinking and smoking."

Rahim Khan began his career as a water carrier in the king's palace. Later, he joined the royal band as a clarinet player.

"I would still love to play the clarinet, but I don't have any teeth left," he lamented.

Rahim Khan lives on a pension of about $30 a month, which he says is more than enough for his needs. He even manages to save $5 or $6 a month.

All of his children have died, so he lives with his brother's great-grandchildren, and enjoys telling them royal tales from the past.

"Nowadays, everyone is after money," Rahim Khan said. "Nobody has any time. In the old days, people used to sit around and chat for hours."

Rahim Khan spends almost his whole day in prayer. He says he is not afraid of death and has only one remaining wish.

"I really hope I can go on hajj," he said, referring to the pilgrimage to Mecca that every Muslim is expected to make during his lifetime.

New Delhi Bureau Chief Anita Pratap contributed to this report.
