BADAKHSHAN, Afghanistan (CNN) -- In a room filled with the smell of blood and disease, Iqbal Bibi lives daily a nightmare that killed her only son 16 years ago.

She and her daughter Hazaar are surviving victims of the same man-made disaster -- land mines.

"I saw my mother unconscious on the ground," says Hazaar, who lost several fingers in the blast. "Then I noticed my own hand and ran. With every step, I thought another mine would explode under my feet."

Despite years of de-mining efforts, thousands of land mines still litter this northeastern province, killing and maiming people -- usually civilians -- indiscriminately and almost daily.

CNN's Marina Fazel reports on the slow pace of efforts to de-mine this beautiful land.
