August 20, 1999
Web posted at: 8:56 a.m. EDT (1256 GMT)

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (CNN) -- A strong earthquake hit Central America on Friday morning, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Scientists estimated the earthquake's magnitude at 6.7. It came three days after a quake, measured at magnitude 7.4, killed thousands of people in Turkey.

"It hit at 4:02 local time, about 55 miles or 80 kilometers south of San Jose," said Don Blakeman, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey.
