MEXICO CITY (CNN) -- A herd of 46 cattle on the way to the slaughterhouse Monday saw an opportunity to escape and took it -- on a busy Mexico City expressway.

When their transport truck crashed trying to go under a low bridge, the cattle took off, with a posse of policemen -- some with lassos -- in pursuit.

One of the escapees broke into a nearby bank building, but died, apparently from wounds it suffered while breaking heavy glass windows.

Commuters, needless to say, were startled.

Police eventually rounded up the herd, and held them at a mounted police compound while a judge decided what to do with the truck driver.

Reuters contributed to this report.
