Being nominated and eventually winning a CNN MultiChoice African Journalist Arts & Culture award in Ghana in 2008 came as a total surprise. I'd only been doing television journalism for less than two years at the time and I thought I hadn't really found "my voice" as a journalist.

The prize was a major confidence booster. It gave me the self belief to go out there and look for the stories that motivated and inspired me even if they were a little obscure.

I've since launched my own production company Blue Turaco which specialises in making short films, documentaries about art & culture, development and the environment. I'm really enjoying nurturing my business and experimenting with new television formats.

Since that thrilling night and excellent party in Accra, I've gone on to win a United Nations Correspondents Association Gold Medal in the Richard Ortega Prize for coverage of the UN and its agencies in Uganda. I would never had the confidence to apply for the competition if it hadn't been for my wonderful experience in Ghana.

I'm not sure what the future will bring, but watch this space.......
