CNN MULTICHOICE AFRICAN JOURNALIST 2006

FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

Finalists in the prestigious CNN MultiChoice African Journalist 2006 Competition were announced today by Joel Kibazo, Chair of the independent judging panel. The competition, now in its eleventh year, received a record-number of entries from 43 countries across Africa.

The partnership with MultiChoice has helped expand the competition to ensure its truly pan-African nature.  The competition, held in association with South African Airways and in collaboration with The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation for HIV/Aids Journalism, and sponsored by a number of leading African companies received 1530 entries from countries throughout the continent, including Francophone and Portuguese speaking Africa.

The finalists, from nine nations, are:

The winners of the competition, now celebrating its eleventh anniversary, will be announced at a gala awards ceremony in Maputo at the Polana Serena Hotel Moçambique, on Saturday July 15th.  

The co-hosts for the evening will be Femi Oke, anchor and reporter for CNN's 'Inside Africa', and Jeff Koinange, CNN's Africa Correspondent.

Announcing the finalists, Joel Kibazo said: "These awards are important because they highlight the depth of talent we have on the African continent. What lies at the heart of this competition are good stories and the African story told well, and we're delighted by what we have seen this year."

The independent judging panel, chaired by Joel Kibazo, Director of Communications and Public Affairs at the Commonwealth Secretariat, includes Dr Doyinsola Abiola, Executive Director, Editorial/Publications, Daily Times of Nigeria Plc., Souleymane Diallo, President of West African Editors' Forum, CNN's Africa correspondent Jeff Koinange, Arlindo Lopes, Secretary General designate of SABA - Southern African Broadcasting Association, Jacqui O'Sullivan, Head of Corporate Communications and CSI, South African Airways and Anna Umbima journalist and broadcaster. Filipe Correia de Sá, Senior Producer at BBC World Service, was brought in to help judge the Portuguese speaking category.

The competition is held in partnership with MultiChoice, in association with South African Airways and in collaboration with The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation for HIV/Aids reporting.   Other prestigious sponsors include Celtel (mobile operators), Ecobank, IPP Media, Johnnic Communications, Merck, Sharp & Dohme (MSD), Safebond Africa Limited (SAL), The Polana Serena Hotel Moçambique, Global Media Alliance and Camerapix.A prestigious new sponsor this year is Coca-Cola Africa.

About the award:

The CNN African Journalist of the Year Award was founded in 1995 by Edward Boateng (formerly African Regional Director for Turner Broadcasting System Inc., CNN's parent company) and the late Mohamed Amin, to recognise and encourage excellence in journalism throughout Africa.

The CNN MultiChoice African Journalist 2006 competition is open to African professional journalists (including freelancers), working on the African continent for media organisations that are (i) African-owned and (ii) headquartered on the continent of Africa and (iii) distribute in Africa a printed publication and/or electronic medium broadcast which is primarily targeted at, and received by, an African audience.

Entries were published or broadcast in 2005 for the following awards: South African Airways Tourism Award; Television -General News - News Bulletin; Television General News - Feature/Current Affairs; Radio - General News; Arts & Culture; MSD Health & Medical; The Henry J.
