BARCELONA, Spain (CNN) -- A Moroccan airliner with 88 people
on board was hijacked late Wednesday en route from
Casablanca, Morocco, to Tunis, Tunisia, and diverted to
Barcelona, Spain's interior ministry said.
The Royal Air Maroc 737-400 landed at Barcelona's El Prat
airport about 11 p.m. (2100 GMT) Wednesday night, taxied to
an isolated area and was immediately surrounded by security
forces.
The number of hijackers and the condition of the passengers
remained unclear. The plane was awaiting permission to
refuel and fly to Frankfurt, Germany, the interior ministry
said.
Spanish police and paramilitary guards were said to be
negotiating with the hijackers from the control tower. No
motive for the hijacking was disclosed.
