The U.S. ambassadors to Kenya, Tanzania

August 7, 1998
Web posted at: 1:47 p.m. EDT (1747 GMT)

U.S. Ambassador to Kenya Prudence Bushnell, who suffered a minor injury in Friday's explosion, is a career international service officer with experience in Africa and India.

President Clinton nominated Bushnell to the post in 1996. She had previously served in Dakar, Senegal and Bombay, India.

Bushnell was born in Washington and educated in Germany, France, Pakistan and Iran.

Charles Stith has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as ambassador to Tanzania, but he has not been sworn into the post.

The U.S. State Department said Stith was in the United States at the time of Friday's blasts.

Stith is founder of the non-profit Organization for a New Equality, aimed at expanding economic opportunity. He served as a Methodist minister in Boston from 1979 to 1994.

In 1994, Clinton selected him as a U.S. delegate to monitor the first multi-racial elections in South Africa.
