Hamster hotrods

June 9, 1998
Web posted at: 11:31 p.m. EDT (0331 GMT)

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (CNN) -- In a scene reminiscent of a Boy Scout model car race, toy vehicles sped across the floors of a pet show Monday, powered completely by hamsters.

While their owners cheered them on, the rodents raced furiously in exercise wheels rigged to make the small cars move forward.

Exotic animals are normally the highlight of the annual Johannesburg pet exhibition, where animal lovers gather to exchange information and talk with veterinarians. This year, the hamster roadsters stole the show.
