Turks clash with police in northern Germany
DORTMUND, Germany (CNN) -- Violence and angry confrontations erupted in several northern cities Saturday as thousands of Kurds tried to make their way to a rally in observance of the Kurdish New Year.
Police in Dortmund arrested 1,300 people who took part in a demonstration in defense of Kurdish rights.
Clashes were also reported along the Dutch and Belgian borders as police turned back buses carrying hundreds of Kurdish demonstrators.
The Kurdish people, with an estimated population of some 20 million, share a national identity but do not have their own state.
