Ukrainian nuclear accident worse than reported

chernobyl

KIEV, Ukraine -- Ukrainian government officials admitted Friday that staff at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant understated the extent of a nuclear incident last November.

The accident -- at the site of the world's worst nuclear accident 10 years ago -- occurred when a hermetic seal broke on a container holding nuclear fuel. One worker was irradiated.

The incident was originally reported as being level one on the international "nuclear event" scale, but has since been upgraded to three. Seven is the highest rating.

Building collapse kills 22 in India

india

BOMBAY, India (CNN) -- Rescue workers have removed 22 bodies from the rubble of a five story apartment building that collapsed late Thursday night.

"The death toll will probably nearly reach 30," said D.J. Kulkarni, Bombay's chief fire officer, who said a number of residents were still missing.

The cause of the collapse is still not known, but a city commissioner said that the building's first two floors had been recently renovated.

Neighbors said the building collapsed without warning, sounding like two trains colliding.
