ZAGREB, Croatia (CNN)--A United Nations spokesman described the situation in Croatia as extremely alarming Tuesday.
U.N. Spokesman Chris Gunness reports that the Croatian Army has mobilized all along the confrontation line on the western edges of the Krajina.
Gunness said there were exchanges of artillery fire in the area northeast of Knin. In addition, three Serb fighter planes targeted the position of Croat positions near the border town of Strmica. In the area east of Knin, Serb troops have built up in response to the Croat threat.
The U.N. has further reports of some withdrawals of Croatian Serbs near Bihac but Gunness would not characterize the withdrawal as substantial. Some 1,000 Croatian Serb troops remain in the area.
