ZAGREB, Croatia (CNN) -- U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher arrived Friday in the Croatian capital and met with Croatian President Franjo Tudjman.

Christopher was expected to ask Croatia to cooperate with the International War Crimes Tribunal, and request patience on the return of Eastern Slavonia, which was seized by Serbs in 1991.

On Saturday, Christopher will travel to Tuzla to visit U.S. troops and then to Sarajevo, where he will meet with Bosnian government leaders.

Also Friday, an American soldier injured by a land mine Thursday was awarded a Purple Heart medal. Doctors said he was recovering well after having part of his foot amputated.

Lt. Robert Washburn, 26, from Gardiner, Maine, stepped on the mine Thursday as he was inspecting a minefield with a Serb officer about 10 miles southwest of Tuzla.

Another soldier, Lt. Graeme Parnell, 23, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was slightly injured by shrapnel from the blast and was expected to return to work in a few days.
