MOSCOW (CNN) -- Russian President Boris Yeltsin, sidelined for a week with a respiratory infection and a hoarse voice, unexpectedly returned to his Kremlin office on Friday but only stayed about three hours before leaving.
"We confirm that Yeltsin has left the Kremlin. He left at midday (0900 GMT). He spent about three hours in the Kremlin in all," a spokesman said.
The spokesman added he did not know where Yeltsin had gone but said it was likely to his residence outside Moscow where he has been convalescing.
After appearing unexpectedly in the Kremlin earlier on Friday, Yeltsin made several telephone calls to government ministers and met two aides, his office said.

Television showed pictures of Yeltsin meeting Sergei Yastrzhembsky, his press secretary and international policy aide, and presidential chief of staff Valentin Yumashev. The president seemed in good form, joking about his suspicion that Kremlin workers relaxed while he was away.
The Kremlin said the video was shot on Friday.
Yeltsin, 67, had not been seen in public since March 12, when he apologized for his hoarseness at a Kremlin ceremony.
On Thursday, the president's staff said he had been taken off antibiotics and was improving. According to the Kremlin, Yeltsin still plans to take part in a three-way summit in Russia on March 25-26 with German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and French President Jacques Chirac.
