No apology from Iran, but that's OK, say some former hostages

Khatami January 8, 1998

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Iranian President Mohammad Khatami, in an interview with Correspondent Christiane Amanpour, did not offer an outright apology for the 1979-80 hostage situation of his country's making.

The saga kept 52 Americans in captivity in the U.S. Embassy in Tehran for 444 days. Nevertheless, several of the former hostages say they are ready for the United States and Iran to forge a new relationship now that Iran has opted for a more moderate government.

Correspondent Steve Hurst talked with some of the former hostages, who shared their opinions of the Khatami interview, recollections of their detention, and hopes for the future.
