PERU (CNN) -- A magnitude 6.5 earthquake rocked a jungle
region of northern Peru early Tuesday. There were reports of
minor damage but no serious injuries.
The quake struck at 1:15 a.m. about 540 miles north of the
capital Lima in a sparsely populated area not far from the
border with Ecuador, scientists said. They said the
earthquake's epicenter was 25 miles north of the town of
Chachapoyas.
Shaking lasted about 40 to 50 seconds.
Previous earthquakes that have struck the region include one
of 6.8 magnitude in 1950 and another of similar strength in
1995.
