PARIS (CNN) -- Trevor Rees-Jones, the sole survivor of the
car crash that killed Britain's Princess Diana and two
others, has told his family that he feels partially
responsible because he could not prevent the accident, a
London newspaper reports.
The Observer, quoting family sources, said Rees-Jones, 29, a
bodyguard assigned to protect the princess and her boyfriend,
Dodi Fayed, spoke to his mother and stepfather when he
temporarily regained consciousness. He remains in intensive
care in the Pitie-Salpetriere hospital in Paris.
The newspaper said Rees-Jones told his family he feels guilty
about the accident last Sunday that killed Diana, Fayed and
chauffeur Henri Paul.
He reportedly said he felt partly responsible because he was
in charge of protecting the couple but that he could not have
prevented the crash.
Rees-Jones, known as "Dodi's shadow," began working for
Fayed's family after leaving the British military and the
elite Royal Protection Squad. He was in the front passenger
seat when the car crashed during a high-speed flight from
paparazzi photographers.
A hospital spokeswoman was not immediately available Sunday
to confirm The Observer's report.
As the only survivor of the crash, Rees-Jones is expected to
be a key witness as French authorities try to piece together
what happened in the moments before the Mercedes sedan
carrying Diana and her party crashed in a Paris tunnel.
