Rollerblade mania sends Lausanne spinning
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (CNN) -- The normally tranquil town of Lausanne was anything but this weekend, as an estimated 150,000 people -- maybe more --
attended the Fourth International Roller and In-line Contest.
The annual bash rolled off on Friday with the
traditional torchlight race to the local lake. The
participants held candles aloft as they whizzed through the
streets on rollerblades, rollerskates, skateboards and even
scooters.
It's not an event for the fainthearted. The rules are lax --
anything goes, even latching onto cars for that extra thrill.
This year's participants hailed from 24 nations, in keeping
with the Olympic spirit that pervades in Lausanne, which once
hosted the Winter Games. There were some special visitors
too, including Batman and Robin. Of course, they left that
Batmobile behind, and donned a pair of ... rollerblades.
