Terrifying plunge ends safely

Parachute August 7, 1997
Web posted at: 11:39 p.m. EDT (0339 GMT)

BRISBANE, Australia (CNN) -- Two parachustists plunged several hundred meters Thursday after their chutes became entangled in mid-air -- but their free fall was checked at the last moment.

The two were part of a group of four parachutists who were performing a star-formation maneuver over Brisbane. The stunt called for the star to then shift into a vertical formation.

But as the change occurred, the two bottom parachutists somehow became caught in each other's gear. They plummeted through the air, spinning wildly out of control as their colleagues looked on in horror.

The two parachutists managed to separate, release emergency chutes and float safely to ground

The drama was captured by a video camera attached to the helmet of a fellow parachutist.
