MPUMALANGA PROVINCE, South Africa (CNN) -- What most people throw away, Philemon Fiki has used to give his squatter's shack a unique look. "Something out of nothing," he says, smiling and laughing, even though he lives in one of South Africa's poorest regions.

CNN photographer Cynthia Strand chronicles a few hours in the life of an unusually cheerful and upbeat man who finds new uses for bottles, cans and just about anything else other people have tossed out.
