BEIT DAJAN, West Bank (CNN) -- A Palestinian was shot dead after he attacked Israeli soldiers near the Elon Moreh settlement in the West Bank Tuesday, Israeli radio said.
An army spokesman said the Palestinian had blocked an army patrol close to the settlement near Nablus and then stabbed the commander.
"Soldiers on patrol in the area were attacked by the Palestinian assailant. One soldier fired his gun in response and killed the attacker," the army stated.
An Israeli soldier was wounded lightly in the incident.
PLO officials said Israel had closed off the area and initially prevented Palestinian policemen from investigating the incident. They said the Nablus police commander was later allowed to inspect the scene.
Israel handed over parts of the West Bank and Gaza Strip to Palestinian rule under peace deals since 1993 but much of the
area remains under Israeli military control.
