SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- The cars that left here Thursday
on a 3,000 kilometer (1.860 mile) race are a joke. But their
mission is serious business.
"Botany Bay to Barrier Reef," as the race is called, is a
fund-raiser for the Variety Club, an international children's
charity.
It's unlikely any of the 99 cars heading north in the
cross-country event have ever been on a race track, at least
not in their current form.
There's one adorned with stuffed pink bunnies and other toys.
Another one is outfitted to look like a camouflaged army
tank.
Organizers estimate it will take about eight days for the
good-natured racers to cover the distance.
