BANGKOK, Thailand (CNN) -- The Burmese government returned an
alleged drug kingpin to Thailand Saturday, arresting him
during a visit to Rangoon by Thai Prime Minister Chavalit
Yongchaiyudh.
Li Yun Chung, who also faces trial in the United States for
importing heroin, was originally arrested in Thailand in July
1996 but was released on bail and failed to appear for a
court appearance on March 7.
Li was reported to have been an aide to one-time drug warlord
Khun Sa in Burma. Khun is also wanted for trial in the United
States.
Burma is trying to improve its image to gain entry into the
Association of Southeast Asian Nations. A statement about the
release said its purpose was to promote better relations and
help in the fight against drugs in the region.
