BOGOTA, Colombia (CNN) -- A senior Colombian lawmaker was wounded and his bodyguard killed Monday in a car bomb attack. Leftist guerillas are suspected of planting the device.
That attack on Julio Enrique Acosta, member of the ruling Liberal Party and vice-chairman of the lower house of Congress, took place in the northeastern town of Arauca. The blast followed threats by guerilla groups on both the left and right to step up attacks before local elections in October.
President Ernesto Samper called an emergency meeting of his security council in the wake of the attack.
