BANGKOK, Thailand (CNN) -- At least 16 people died and more
than 80 were injured early Monday morning in the northeastern
province of Nakhon Ratchasima when a truck went out of
control and ran into two buses.
The 10-wheel refrigerated truck, carrying fish, hit the rear
of a tour bus, then jumped across a canal that acted as a
road divider and ran into an oncoming public bus. The driver
of the second bus was killed instantly, police said. The
truck driver survived the accident and fled the scene. Police
speculated that he may have fallen asleep on the road.
The accident took place during the Buddhist New Year, when
many people travel back home from the capital; the two buses
were traveling between Bangkok and Roi-et. Mass traffic
fatalities, many caused by unsafe drivers, are common on
upcountry roads in Thailand.
