IRA gunman shoots policewoman in Northern Ireland
LONDON (CNN) -- The Irish Republican Army has claimed
responsibility for the shooting of a policewoman in
Londonderry, Northern Ireland, on Thursday.
Hospital officials said the officer, who is married and the
mother of three children, was listed in serious but stable
condition Thursday night with wounds to the chest.
The IRA has targeted police and soldiers in its armed
campaign against British rule in the province.
The Derry Journal received a coded telephone call from the
IRA after the 46-year-old officer was shot outside the main
courthouse in Londonderry while on a regular security patrol.
