WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A U.S. Navy sailor accused of raping a
Japanese woman is in custody on a base in Yokohama, Japan.
The incident allegedly occurred Tuesday in the barracks at
the Yokosuka naval base; the 21-year-old woman reported it
Wednesday.
Navy sources said blood tests showed the 27-year-old petty
officer, whose name was not released, was legally intoxicated
at the time of the incident, which was being investigated by
the Naval and Japanese authorities.
Anger against American forces in Okinawa boiled up after a
12-year-old girl was raped by U.S. servicemen in September
1995. Two Marines and one sailor were convicted.
