SUDAN (CNN) -- Sudanese rebels claimed Thursday to have
captured three more towns on the country's eastern border
with Eritrea, but Sudan's army denied the loss.
A Sudanese army spokesman says his troops could "move to any
spot they want," and that the army has stopped the rebel
advance.
The rebels insist that they are on the offensive and aim to
cut Sudan's capital, Khartoum, off from its main commercial
port, Port Sudan.
Sudan has repeatedly accused Eritrea, Ethiopia and Uganda of
backing the rebels, a charge all three countries deny.
Rebels of the National Democratic Alliance have been fighting
Sudan's government since 1983.
