KAMPALA, Uganda (CNN) -- Ugandan rebel leader Colonel Juma
Oris was killed in a weekend clash between his West Nile Bank
Front (WNBF) and the Uganda army, military sources said in
Kampala on Sunday.
The sources said Oris was among several WNBF rebels killed in
a battle near the Uganda-Sudan border on Saturday. Oris, a
close associate of former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, formed
the WNBF in 1993 to overthrow Ugandan President Yoweri
Museveni.
The Uganda army recently stepped up operations against the
rebels, who had been driven from their former bases in
neighboring Zaire by rebels who now control areas along the
Uganda border.
