BELFAST, Northern Ireland (CNN) -- A soldier was killed and a woman was wounded late Wednesday in a sniper attack at a checkpoint in the town of Bessbrook 40 miles (60 kilometers) west of Belfast.
The woman, a civilian, was hospitalized with a head wound that wasn't life-threatening, police said. Two other civilians were treated for shock.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the killing, but the nature of the killing suggests the Irish Republican Army was responsible.
