Rio's carnival kicks into high gear

Web posted at: 11:55 p.m. EST (0455 GMT)RIO DE JANEIRO (CNN) -- Brazilians Sunday cast aside their inhibitions for carnival as the pre-Lenten party shifted into high gear.
The streets and beaches of Rio de Janeiro came to life as colorful cartoon characters, scantily-clad marchers and assorted other revelers sporting outrageous costumes paraded through the city.
Spectators Sunday enjoyed the traditional samba-dancing beauties in glittering tangas as fireworks, dry ice and confetti filled the tropical air.
