GUATEMALA CITY (CNN) -- Guatemalan soldiers and rebellious
military police were faced off against one another early
Sunday in a stalemate over the policemen's demand for
compensation when a newly signed peace accord eliminates
their jobs.
The army has surrounded a compound seized by the police
Wednesday.
The 4,000-member force will be dissolved later this year
under the terms of the accord signed December 29 between
rebels and the Guatemalan government. The accord ended
Central America's longest civil war.
