UNITED NATIONS (CNN) -- China on Friday vetoed a U.N.
Security Council resolution that would have authorized a
military observer force to back up the new peace accord in
Guatemala.
China opposed the resolution because of the Central American
nation's relations with Taiwan.
The vote was 14-1. China's veto -- its first in 24 years --
means the resolution does not pass.
China's last veto came in 1972 on a resolution regarding the
Middle East.
