MANILA, Philippines (CNN) -- Philippine President Fidel Ramos
underwent surgery Monday for what could have been a
life-threatening blockage in a major artery. He was
recuperating well and eager to get back to work, officials
said.
Doctors said the 75-minute operation to remove a buildup of
cholesterol in the right carotid artery was successful and
uncomplicated. Blockages in the carotids, the two main
arteries carrying blood to the brain, can lead to a stroke.
The 68-year-old president was in good shape and could be
discharged on Christmas Day or Thursday, according to a
statement from the Makati Medical Center in Manila.
