WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The United States Wednesday began evacuating people affiliated with American organizations from northern Iraq.
About 5,000 so called non-governmental employees and their family members will be taken first to Turkey and then flown to Guam on chartered civilian aircraft, said a State Department spokesman.
In Guam, the Iraqis will be processed for asylum to the U.S. following the same procedures used in earlier evacuation. Most, but not all, of the current evacuees are Kurds who are believed to be in danger of retaliation from Saddam Hussein's security forces.
