Chinese dissident leaves prison for medical treatment

BEIJING (CNN) -- Chinese dissident Chen Ziming, sentenced to
13 years in prison for his role during 1989 pro-democracy
protests, returned home late Wednesday on medical parole.
Family members said the 44-year-old activist suffers from
cancer and other ailments that have worsened during his time
in prison. His relatives had fought especially hard recently
to get him released for treatment
Chen is recuperating at his Beijing apartment under virtual
house arrest, with police surrounding the building. Chen was
released from jail in 1994 for medical reasons, but was
re-arrested in 1995 when he stated a hunger strike to mark
the 1989 crackdown.
