BEIJING (CNN) -- Chinese dissident Chen Ziming, sentenced to 13 years in prison for his role during 1989 pro-democracy protests, returned home late Wednesday on medical parole.

Family members said the 44-year-old activist suffers from cancer and other ailments that have worsened during his time in prison. His relatives had fought especially hard recently to get him released for treatment

Chen is recuperating at his Beijing apartment under virtual house arrest, with police surrounding the building. Chen was released from jail in 1994 for medical reasons, but was re-arrested in 1995 when he stated a hunger strike to mark the 1989 crackdown.
