(CNN) -- Investigators have identified duct tape as a major
factor in the crash of a Peruvian 757 jetliner into the
Pacific Ocean last month after takeoff from Lima, Peru,
aviation sources said. All 70 people on board the Aeroperu
Boeing 757 were killed.
Workers placed the tape over crucial sensors while they were
cleaning and polishing the plane's exterior. They apparently
forgot to remove it.
With the sensors covered, the pilot could not accurately
determine key navigational data such as air speed and
altitude. The pilots of the plane radioed back to Lima
minutes after takeoff that their instruments had failed.
