WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. Defense Secretary William Perry and
South Korean Defense Minister Kim Dong-jin refused to comment
directly on a CNN story that the South Korean government
considered sending its troops into the Korean Demilitarized
Zone in response to an incursion by a North Korean submarine
September 18.
"We have definitely no plans to send, in retaliation, our
troops into the DMZ," said Kim.
Added Perry: "Any military action we have considered, for any
provocation, would be taken by the combined forces in Korea,
and therefore would be coordinated."
"I would not forecast specific actions that would be taken in
response to this or future such provocation. But any such
actions would be taken jointly by the United States and the
Republic of Korea as partners in full consultation with
each other," said Perry.
